Binge Eating
BINGE EATING DISORDER
Let’s face it... if that heading has caught your attention it’s probably because you or someone you know is dealing with a binge eating issue.
Binge eating disorder (B.E.D) is more common place than many of us realise and has unfortunately become more prevalent in today’s selfie-driven society.
Binge eating, like other addictive behaviours, whether it's drinking, eating, or shopping generally have similar causes. Bingeing often begins during times of stress, anger, boredom or distress, and at these times may be a means of coping with challenging or negative emotions that are often not rational, nor healthy.
Left untreated, binge eating can evolve into an emotionally and physically destructive disorder.
B.E.D. Is categorised by:
* Frequent episodes of binge eating involving the consumption of a large amount of food, accompanied by a loss of control over eating and the inability to stop the binge.
* A range of identifiable eating habits, including eating very quickly, eating without being hungry and continuing to eat to discomfort when already full.
* Feelings of guilt and shame about the amount of food.
* Secretive behaviours around food.
So then, when does the occasional overindulgence become a real bingeing problem?
Generally, fully-fledged binge disorders are characterised by feelings of powerlessness, secrecy, shame, social isolation and an inability to STOP. Once someone feels a need to binge in private, or schedule binges around work, school and social obligations, it's time to ask why.

2. Be kind on yourself.
Often when clients get to the point of seeking professional help they are in emotional turmoil. The recovery process begins with self-love and self-acceptance. These types of disorders are often associated with the need for perfection and if you can relate to this try to be kind on yourself. No one is perfect! Once you are ready to shed the guilt and shame that are synonymous with binge eating you are able to start the healing process.
3. Focus on health not weight.
There is a real difference between focusing on calorie counting, fasting, bingeing and body size compared to clean eating, body movement, hydration, rest and recovery. The latter leads you away from B.E.D and gives you back the quality of life that you deserve. Health means different things to different people but the underlying foundations are the same. Healthy living provides you with a healthy mind and body.
